Frequently Asked Questions: General

What is a non-stick bandage?

A non-stick bandage is one which sticks to the surrounding skin, but will not stick to the wound itself. Most over-the-counter bandage strips are non-stick.

What can I use for pain after liquid nitrogen?

Provided you do not have an allergy or liver problems, we recommend acetominophen (TylenolTM) for discomfort following any procedure. Other over-the-counter pain relievers may cause bleeding at the treated site.

Can I get a site that has been treated with liquid nitrogen wet?

Yes.

How long do I need to keep my biopsy site covered?

Wounds heal faster and better if they are kept covered. We recommend that you keep any wound covered until you can see new skin forming. This usually takes 10-15 days. If you stop covering your wound and it starts to form a crust or scab, you should cover it back up for a few more days. Leaving a wound exposed to the air to "breathe" will not help it heal.

I am using a retinoid (tretinoin, AvitaTM, Retin-ATM, TazoracTM, DifferinTM) and benzoyl peroxide (TriazTM, BenzacTM, BenzamycinTM, BenzaclinTM, DuacTM) for my acne and my face is red/burning/peeling, what should I do?

1) Discontinue the use of any astringents or acne washes which may be contributing to drying your skin.

2) You will need to use a moisturizer with the these medications. Any moisturizer made for the face is acceptable. You may contact our Cosmetic Skin Care Center if you wish to use a physician-formulated product.

3) If you are still having problems, you may also need to discontinue, at least temporarily, one of your medications. Please contact your physican for advice on this point.
